The end of a long journey

First things first: Since last Sunday I was home again!

After three exciting months on the road, unfortunately I had to bury the dream of a big journey, because my money and energy reserves were near the bottom. Although I had the trip through Russia (keyword: "Trans-Siberian Railway") is very excited, but I just felt that it would not make sense right now. Some things in life simply can not force ...

from Vilnius in Lithuania, I made myself so back on the long journey to Austria. In Berlin I made it a little stopover at meiner Cousine Johanna, die dort zur Zeit gerade ein Praktikum absolviert.




Gemeinsam mit Johanna zog ich zwei Tage lang durch die deutsche Hauptstadt, wobei es für mich (trotz zweier früherer Berlin-Besuche) viel Neues zu sehen gab. Zum Beispiel machten wir eine Sightseeing-Fahrt auf der Spree. Dabei konnten wir beide die Stadt von einer ganz neuen Seite erleben.








Außerdem bekam ich endlich die Gelegenheit, den Reichstag bzw. die moderne Glaskuppel auf dem Dach zu besichtigen. Zwar mussten Johanna und ich eine ganze Weile lang für diese Attraction queue, but the wait has been worth it. Not only because the giant construction is incredibly simple but also because it has a great view from the top of Berlin. was

A special highlight it then on the last weekend, as that is in many government buildings an "Open Day" took place, which we of course could not be missed. And so we moved from the Federal Office for the Federal Press Office and even visited the ARD studio.

Here are some impressions of this eventful day:

On Sunday morning, I then took the ICE train to Ulm, where I in a regional express Switching to Lindau. From there went to a regional Vorarlberg, and at eight clock I was back in Altach. After I directed my return home ready for the stage and surprised my family strong, I had to tell the same lot.

The Baltic Combo

After I had explored in the past three months, Scandinavia thoroughly, I set out late last week on the way to the Baltic States. My first stop was the Estonian capital of Tallinn, only three hours by ferry from Helsinki is located. The historic Hanseatic city has one of the best preserved medieval old towns in Europe, as you can see on the pictures below.

Tallinn is really a beautiful city that is also culturally (and linguistically) to expect more of the Scandinavian, as the Baltic region. This confirmed me Deniss, couch-surfing one of my many friends that I kennengerlent in Stockholm and Tallinn have met again. Together we marched through the city and He showed me some very interesting sights outside of the center.

After my visit to Estonia, the journey continued to Latvia. The capital city Riga had earlier also to the Hanseatic Empire, which I was again able to enjoy a wonderful old town.

Abschliessend stand noch der Besuch der litauischen Hauptstadt Vilnius auf dem Programm. Obwohl ich im Vorfeld recht wenig über die Stadt in Erfahrung bringen konnte, wurde ich nach meiner Ankunft positiv überrascht. Litauen wirkte nämlich im Grossen und Ganzen nicht so modern (und westlich) wie seine two Baltic neighbors, but at least the center of Vilnius has to offer.

The more I traveled to Finland to the south, the greater were the cities and the hotter the weather. When I arrived in Tampere, the second largest city in the country, ruled for nearly 30 degrees in the shade. Before I went on my way to Helsinki, I made a little trip to Turku. The port city on the southwestern tip of Finland has long been the capital of the country and has so much history. Path along the river as I strolled through the city, I was able to convince me in detail.

I also took a day a Trip to Suomenlinna, a small island off the town that once housed a mighty fortress. Unfortunately, today only the ruins of the castle are visible, but the whole is impressive nonetheless.

Men Caught In There Underwear

...kann man ja überall in Finnland, aber im Zentrum des Landes sind besonders viele vorhanden. Die finnisch-karelische Seenplatte verfügt insgesamt über (unglaubliche) 55.000, und davon konnte ich mich in den letzten Tagen überzeugen, auch wenn ich nach 1.759 aufgehört habe zu zählen.

Mein erster Stopp in diesem Gebiet war die Stadt Joensuu, in der sich auch eines der besten Museums der Gegend befindet. Dort konnte ich viel über die bewegte Geschichte dieses Gebietes, welches ständig zwischen Schweden, Russland und Finnland herumgereicht wurde, erfahren. Leider war das Wetter während meiner drei Tage in Joensuu fast dauernd bewölkt und eher cool, what was for the city tour, of course not very pleasant.

Eigentlich war es sogar fast zu heiss unter Tags, aber am Abend war es dann einfach nur herrlich. Da der gesamte Ort von mehreren kleinen Inseln umgeben ist, konnte man per Brücken auf diese gelangen und dort traumhafte Landschaften geniessen.




Ein besonderes Highlight in Savonlinna war die Besichtigung der mittelalterlichen Burg Olavinlinna. Dabei handelt es sich um eine der am besten erhaltenen Burgen in ganz Skandinavien. Auf der Führung erfuhren wir dann mehr über die Geschichte der Festung und deren heutige Nutzung als Opernfestspielgelände.



After
Savonlinna my travel on to Lahti. The especially for winter sports (cross country skiing, ski jumping, etc.) known location was on my route towards Tampere and so I decided to do there for a few days hold.

Which, of course a must on any visit to Lahti is a visit to the huge ski area. A lift takes visitors to the top of the highest hill, which is a good (and frightening at the same time) get insight into the perspective of the athletes.

Although the city is not really known for their vast amounts of interest, it has fallen to me there really good. I also had the honor once again to live at a Finnish couch-surfer, the computer game sellers (!) Timo. Despite his job, he has really taken a long time to show me his city. On one evening we held with some of his friends a small barbecue.
